Add Water to the Coco Peat

Before using coco peat, you need to hydrate well. You need to saturate the coco peat with water before you use it for seed starting or nursery. Saturating the coco peat with water will help in removing excess salt from the coco peat. It can also help in balancing the pH of the coco peat.

Choose the right type of seedlings’ tray or container

Coco peat is usually put in seedlings trays or containers before it can be used for seed starting. Black colour nursery tray is usually preferable because it can help to retain heat. The containers and nursery trays should have holes at their bases so that excess water can drain off.

Fill the nursery tray with coco peat

If the coco peat comes in blocks, the blocks should be broken up so that the coco peat materials can be easily placed in the nursery trays or containers. The surface of the container or nursery tray should be leveled so that the coco peat will not be too much in the trays or containers.

Sow the seeds

After filling up the trays or containers with coco peat, you need to sow the seeds in each hole in the seedlings’ trays. One seed should be placed in every hole in the nursery trays. One seed should also be put in each container.

Water Regularly

After sowing the seeds, the coco peat should be watered regularly so that the seedlings can grow well. A sprayer can be used to water the seedlings in the nursery trays. Watering can and sprinklers can also be used for watering.

Grow in a sunny location

The nursery trays filled up with coco peat should be placed where there is abundant sunlight. Seedlings will not grow if they do not get sunlight. Sunlight is a must for the process of photosynthesis. Without photosynthesis, plants cannot grow.

Transplant Seedlings

The last step in using coco peat for seed starting is the transplantation of the seedlings. Vegetables’ seedlings are usually transplanted to the field after 4 – 6 weeks. Hardening off should be done before the transplantation of the seedlings.
