Plastic mulches are categorized according to their thicknesses. The thickness of a plastic mulch measures the volume of polythene used for its production.
A plastic mulch is said to be thick if more polythene is used for its production. Plastic mulches that are not thick are made of lesser volume of polythene.
The thickness of the plastic mulch is measures in mils, microns and millimetres. The thickness of the mulch is also known as the gauge.

Types of Plastic Mulch According to their Thickness
25 Microns Thick Plastic Mulch
The 25 microns thick plastic mulch is usually used in the cultivation of seasonal and short term crops. Due to the light nature of this plastic mulch, it is usually used for a season. You may not be able to use this type of plastic mulch for more than 12 months.
30 Microns Thick Plastic Mulch
The 30 microns thick plastic mulch is slightly thicker than the 25 microns plastic mulch. It is also used for weed control in vegetables farming. This type of plastic mulch has an average lifespan of 12 months.
35 Micron Thick Plastic Mulch
The 35 microns thick plastic mulch is thick and can be used for weed control for over 12 months. This type of plastic mulch is more expensive than the 25 microns thick plastic mulch and the 30 microns thick plastic mulch.
50 Micron Thick Plastic Mulch
The 50 microns thick plastic mulch can last longer than the other types of plastic mulch highlighted above. It can last for more than 12 months on the soil.

Uses of Plastic Mulch According to Their Thickness
Plastic mulch of 25 – 35 microns thick are usually used for weed control in vegetable crops like tomato, pepper, cucumber and watermelon etc. They are also used for weed control in broad acre crops like maize, soybeans and millets etc.
Plastic mulch with thicknesses above 35 microns can be used for crops like cocoa, banana, plantain and cashew etc. These very thick plastic mulches can last for above 24 months on the soil.
What is a Plastic Mulch
The plastic mulch is a polythene made film used for sealing off the surface of the soil to prevent the growth of weeds. The plastic mulch is an effective weed control tool, it can stop the growth of weeds on the soil.
Another benefit of the Plastic mulch is that it ensures that the weeds do not get sunlight, hence preventing their growth. Holes are created on the plastic mulch for the planting of crops. The plastic mulch is one of the products of the plasticulture technology used in modern farming.
