Successful Dewatering Projects in Nigeria

Dewatering is the process of removing water from solid material or soil. Dewatering is usually done in construction sites, mining sites, dredging sites, flooded areas and other areas.

Dewatering pumps are usually the equipment used for the removal of water from where it is not needed. The dewatering pumps to be used for dewatering purposes vary as per specification and type.

Dewatering has become a critical aspect of engineering and construction projects globally. In Nigeria, with its diverse climatic conditions and varying geological formations, dewatering is particularly important. Effective dewatering ensures the stability and safety of construction sites, mining operations, and infrastructure projects.

Notable Dewatering Projects in Nigeria

1. Eko Atlantic City

Location: Lagos

Overview: Eko Atlantic City is a monumental urban development project aimed at reclaiming land from the Atlantic Ocean to create a new city that will serve as a financial hub for West Africa. Given its location on reclaimed land, effective dewatering was crucial.

Techniques Used:

Deep Well Dewatering: This involved drilling deep wells to lower the groundwater table, ensuring a stable foundation for the city’s infrastructure.

Cut-off Walls: These were constructed to prevent seawater intrusion and maintain dry construction sites.

Challenges:

High Water Table: The proximity to the ocean meant dealing with a constantly high water table.

Seawater Intrusion: Preventing seawater from entering the reclaimed land required innovative solutions.

Outcomes:

The project has successfully reclaimed over 10 square kilometers of land.

Stable and dry construction sites have been maintained, allowing continuous progress.

2. Ajaokuta Steel Plant

Location: Kogi State

Overview: The Ajaokuta Steel Plant is a massive industrial project aimed at establishing a steel manufacturing hub in Nigeria. Dewatering was essential to ensure the stability of the plant’s foundations and prevent groundwater from affecting the operations.

Techniques Used:

Wellpoint Systems: A series of wellpoints were installed around the construction area to lower the groundwater level.

Submersible Pumps: These were used to continuously remove water from the site.

Challenges:

Seasonal Variations: The plant’s location experiences significant seasonal rainfall, requiring adaptable dewatering strategies.

High Groundwater Levels: The presence of high groundwater levels demanded continuous monitoring and management.

Outcomes:

The plant’s foundations were successfully stabilized, paving the way for the construction of key facilities.

Dewatering solutions have been implemented to manage seasonal water influx effectively.

3. Lagos Badagry Expressway Expansion

Location: Lagos

Overview: The Lagos Badagry Expressway expansion project aims to improve one of Nigeria’s critical transportation corridors. Effective dewatering was vital to ensure the stability of the expanded roadway and prevent water-related delays.

Techniques Used:

Trench Dewatering: Trenches were excavated alongside the roadway to collect and remove groundwater.

Horizontal Drains: These were installed to facilitate the drainage of water away from the construction site.

Challenges:

Heavy Rainfall: The Lagos region experiences heavy rainfall, posing challenges for maintaining dry construction sites.

Urban Setting: The project’s urban location required careful management to avoid disrupting surrounding areas.

Outcomes:

The expansion has progressed with minimal water-related disruptions, enhancing the efficiency of the project.

Improved roadway stability has been achieved, ensuring long-term durability.

4. Kaduna Mining Project

Location: Kaduna

Overview: The dewatering project aims to remove water from various mining ponds and dams around the mining sites. Tin Ore, Gold and Lithium are mined from this mining location in Kaduna.

Techniques Used:

Pump Dewatering: Centrifugal Pumps powered by 200HP diesel motors were deployed to remove water from the mining sites so that the miners can have easy access to the mineral deposits.

Challenges:

Heavy Rainfall: There was heavy rainfall in the period of June – September when the dewatering work commenced.

Outcomes:

The dewatering work enabled the miners to start excavating and looking for minerals. During rainy season in Nigeria, mining sites are usually shut because of the problem of excessive water. This was not the case in this particular mining site.

The Importance of Dewatering in Nigeria

Nigeria’s topography ranges from coastal regions with high water tables to arid zones with limited groundwater. This diversity necessitates tailored dewatering solutions for different projects. The key benefits of effective dewatering include:

Enhanced Construction Safety: Removing excess water reduces the risk of soil instability and collapse, ensuring the safety of construction workers and structures.

Improved Project Efficiency: Dewatering allows for a dry and stable working environment, enabling construction activities to proceed without delays.

Environmental Protection: Properly managed dewatering prevents waterlogging and soil erosion, protecting the surrounding environment.

Please note that the above dewatering work was done by some construction companies in Nigeria. Some of them procured their dewatering pumps from us.
