The types of irrigation are:
- Surface Drip Irrigation System
- Subsurface Drip Irrigation system
- Drip Tape
- Arrow Dripper
- Micro-Spray Irrigation or Spray Tube Irrigation
Surface Drip Irrigation System
Surface drip irrigation system is a type of drip irrigation system in which the drip tapes or drip hoses are laid on the surface of the soil. This system is used to irrigate row crops.
Surface drip irrigation system has the advantage of spotting problems easily when they emerge unlike subsurface drip irrigation system.
The life span of the surface drip irrigation system may be shortened because of the effects of sunlight.
Subsurface Drip Irrigation System
The subsurface drip irrigation is also a type of drip irrigation. It involves the laying of drip tapes or drip pipes below the surface of the soil. It is more effective than the surface drip irrigation system in the wetting of the root zone of plants.
The subsurface drip irrigation system is usually used to grow row crops especially vegetable crops.
The drip tape is a hose made of flexible polythene with pre-installed emitters on it. It is used to irrigate row crops. The drip tape is the principal component of the drip irrigation system.
The drip tape comes in different sizes, length, thickness and emitter spacing. Drip tape is also considered as a type of drip irrigation.
The arrow dripper is an arrow shaped drip irrigation device inserted into the soil beside a plant. It drips water to the soil area beside the plant.
The arrow dripper can be used for almost all types of crops. It is versatile as it can work for all crops.
Micro-Spray Irrigation or Spray Tube Irrigation
The micro-spray irrigation or spray tube is a type of drip irrigation. It sprays water to the surfaces of plants. Though, it works like sprinklers, it is also known as a type of drip irrigation system.
What is Drip Irrigation?
Drip Irrigation is the use of tubes or pipes to irrigate crops by passing water to the roots of the crops in a trickle manner. Drip irrigation is the most efficient type of irrigation in the world.
With drip irrigation, the roots of plants can get water in drops. Drip irrigation only targets the roots of plants for irrigation unlike other types of irrigation that sprays water to the leaves and stems of plants.
