Urea fertilizer is the most popular nitrogenous fertilizer used for the growing of crops in Nigeria. Urea fertilizer contains 46 – 49% nitrogen. Urea fertilizer is usually used during the vegetative stage of plants.
Urea fertilizers can be applied to plants through base dressing, foliar application, top dressing, side dressing and Fertigation.
How to use Urea Fertilizer
The following are the steps to take to use Urea fertilizer:
Do a soil test to determine the quantity of Urea to use
The first step before applying urea fertilizer is to conduct a soil analysis. The soil test will show the level of nutrients in the soil. It will also guide the farmer to know the quantity of urea fertilizer to apply to each plant.
Mix the Urea fertilizer with water
Most famers prefer to mix the Urea fertilizer with water before use. For foliar application, mix 100 grams of Urea with 200 litres of water and spray to the plants. A knapsack sprayer or motorized sprayer can be used to spray the fertilizer solution.
Fertigation can also be used to pass Urea fertilizer to the root zone of plants. Fertigation involves the dissolving of fertilizers in water and passing of the fertilizer solutions through the drip irrigation lines to the roots of plants.
Application of the fertilizer to crops
Urea fertilizer can be used as top dressing, base dressing and side dressing. For top dressing, the granules of the Urea fertilizer should be sprinkled around in the farmland.
For side dressing, the fertilizer should be buried in holes dug beside each plant.
Do not use poor quality insoluble Urea fertilizer. Insist on getting high quality soluble Urea fertilizer.
For most crops, urea fertilizer will need to be applied more than once. Repeat application of urea fertilizer should be done after 1-3 weeks. Over-application of urea fertilizer can negatively impact the crop.
